I tried the K-W-L chart and loved it! The chart worked really well! We were just starting a unit on investing in Personal Finance class. This unit was to help get us ready for the Stock Market Game. This game is a real life game where the students start with 100,000 dollars and are able to buy/sell stocks in groups of three. So they have to do a lot of research on stocks and the economic issues that are currently effecting the stock market.
As we began the first section of investing, I wanted the students to write down, what they already Knew about investing. What they Wanted to know. Then I had the students start reading the chapter. I told them that they could fill out the What did they Learn as they went through the reading or or at the end of the chapter.
This worked very well and students had great things in the column, "What they wanted to Learn" so this helped me as to what direction I need to go so they were able to meet those needs.
Hope this works well for all the rest of the teachers out there.

Sounds like the real world out there is coming into the class rooms. Way to go, we definitely didn't have hands on in my day.
ReplyDeleteI really like using KWL charts too! I've had to use them in some classes that I take and it really helps you focus on what you are learning.
